Strategic Planning Deserves a Strategic Location

Your competitors are booking the same conference centers. Same boardrooms. Same uninspiring environments that produce the same predictable outcomes.

Banubanu Beach Retreat is where corporate leaders step away from the boardroom to reconnect with vision, culture, and each other. It’s a sanctuary for strategic clarity, executive alignment, and cultural renewal—designed for organisations that aspire to lead with purpose and impact.

Your leadership team deserves better so make the effort and live by your values!

Banubanu @ Bremer Island: Complete privacy, zero distractions with cultural and historical connections that demonstrates your values in action.

We handle every detail from Nhulunbuy transfers to cultural experiences with our local Yolŋu island community. Your team focuses on strategy, not logistics.

Corporate retreat season opens 1 July 2026.

With our mainland Lodge, you have somewhere to stay to ensure connections to and from Gove and the Island all line up.

Sustainable Living & Brief History

Sustainability

One of our core values at Banubanu is a commitment to sustainable living. Our beach retreat was built in partnership with the local Yolgnu people of East Arnhem Land, some of whom continue to live on their ancestral home of Bremer Island. The island itself remains largely untouched by industry, unspoilt by pollution, and unrivalled for natural beauty. As such, Banubanu is designed to have minimal impact on the local environment.
‍
The retreat runs on 100% solar power, utilises bore water as its main water supply, and promotes water wise practices, making Banubanu Beach Retreat an eco-friendly, environmentally conscious holiday destination.

So for those looking to “get off the grid,” our beach retreat is the perfect place to experience the sun, sand, and clear waters of a tropical island getaway whilst being environmentally responsible.

To further reduce our impact on the local environment, capacity at Banubanu is capped at any given time, meaning that you can expect to enjoy all that the island has to offer with a peace and privacy which is unique in itself

European arrival

European mapping of the area began in the early 1800s when Matthew Flinders charted the coastline during his voyage around Australia. Initially labelled part of the “Melville Isles,” the island was officially renamed Bremer Island in 1934 in honour of Sir James John Gordon Bremer, a British naval officer.

Preserving stories and traditions

Today, the small Yolŋu community of Gutjangan continues to call the island home, preserving the stories and traditions of their ancestors. Bremer’s beaches remain important nesting grounds for sea turtles, while the surrounding waters and skies hold deep cultural and ecological significance.

Sharing the island's beauty and history

Banubanu Beach Retreat operates with the blessing of the traditional owners, sharing the island’s beauty and history with guests who come to experience the spirit of Dhambaliya — where ancient culture, Macassan trade, and timeless sea country meet.

The meaning of Banubanu

The name Banubanu was given to the large rocky outcrops at Banubanu Beach Retreat by Maccassan traders well before European colonisation. Banu is a Persian name for a woman whereby Banubanu would mean women, which these large boulders represent.
